Tent Inside Tent Winter Camping

Tent Inside Tent Winter Camping

Well, the title is pretty self-explanatory haha. I set up a couple tents like Russian nesting dolls in some moderately cold weather. I used the insulated otter vortex ice fishing shelter for the outer layer, and for the inner layer I attempted to use candles to heat the tent system, and I do believe I will stick to my propane solutions for warmth from this point on.

Good expirament! Did you shovel snow up against the ice shanty walls to seal the wind out?
I have a hanging candle holder that uses a stick candle. It does seem to help burn off some of the condensation that occurs when I’ve camped in sub-freezing weather. These candles last for hours too. Mr. Buddies are "the bomb"!
You cook like I do….it’s amazing how good even the screw-ups taste at that temperature!

R value,, it’s all based off of air traped in suspension,, one can take it a step forward and go 3/4 layers,, but earth is the best base layer

  28. renee losie on September 21, 2021 at 11:52 pm

Your candles should burn slower because they’re cold in the snow.

  29. Mark1968 Mclaughlin on September 21, 2021 at 11:53 pm

u should have shoveled some snow around outside of outter tent to insulate bottom of tent. U should have brought big pan could hold alot of water and some foil paper and some heat fire resistance pipe steam steve u could have been in Bahamas boiling water steam heat that tent up in no time.

I’d be very surprised if that carbon monoxide detector works in that temperature. Even if the circuitry could support it, the battery almost certainly won’t put out enough current at -16 to power it for any length of time. Be careful.

I grew up rural and have worked almost my entire life in the bush (mining, logging, prospecting). I’ve never really understood camping for the sake of camping. Why work for 50 weeks in the year just to pretend that I’m homeless for the remaining 2 weeks? It’s always seemed somewhat self abusive. This is next level masochism.

Steve: This is not an informative channel.
Me: I disagree. You show the real world stuff and not sponsored content.
I used to watch a lot of people like you but they started to just outright lie or show the life of camping when you have tons of money. But you show us, that we normal people can have a great time camping too.
Thanks Steve. You help my depression more than my assigned counselor.

How can you sleep in literally freezing temperatures? Its like your sleeping in a walk in freezer. We had a winter storm come through Texas last year and the -10° temperatures knocked out our power. My feet went numb after about 5 or 6 hours and i had 2 pair of socks on.

  35. Kingpurest on September 21, 2021 at 11:58 pm

Newspaper, lighter fluid, and a blowtorch. Just like the Indians taught us

  36. Paul Ferry on September 21, 2021 at 11:59 pm

I was initially thinking the first tent was going to be completely enclosed like the second one. If it were, I would have brought a large heavy blanket or two to lay on the floor of the first tent for added insulation prior to setting the second tent on top.

  37. drumteacher43 on September 22, 2021 at 12:01 am

Steve and chuck Norris will share step 2’s together in an upcoming episode!

  39. Noid Entity on September 22, 2021 at 12:02 am

For the tea lights… bring three aluminum pie pans and an empty tin can. Put two plates together for a base and place the can in the middle. put as many tea lights as you can on the base plate around the can and the place the last pan on top of the can. The heat will be conducted through the top plate to warm the tent but also reflect onto the candles to keep them warm enough to support combustion.
