Striper Fishing On The California Delta

Striper Fishing On The California Delta

This was my first time trolling the California Delta on the Sacramento River south of Rio Vista along with Jay and Josh. It was raining most of the week and we got a lucky break the day we went. No rain with overcast most of the day. The Sacramento River was murky and flow was fast with debris every where which made trolling the Atlas Umbrella Rigs very difficult.

We weren’t able to land anything the entire morning on the outgoing tide. It was also the Spring striper run so we were looking for a big spawner. Stumped, we hit the San Joaquin River to test our luck and finally found a few stripers and bass to keep us busy.

Later in the afternoon, we decided to try the Sacramento River again and found it to be a lot clearer than the morning. I had on the blue shad Atlas Rig at the time when I thought I snagged the bottom. It didn’t feel much like a big fish after I hooked into it. Heavy but not much fight to it. It wasn’t until we got the striper closer to the boat that it began peeling line. That’s when I remembered we forgot to turn the camera on. Here’s the rest of what happened afterward we turned the camera on.

  21. DeltaProMaster Lauj on April 16, 2020 at 6:24 pm

Nice catch!!! Did you get that DD on the downrigger? Down-riggers aren’t really used in the delta system, could be because of fast current flows and fluctuations of depth changes……next time try targeting those swallow flats and sand bars, I won’t guarantee a lunker like the one you caught but can almost guarantee you will put more fish in the box.
