Kayak Camping the Frio River – Her First Trip!

Kayak Camping the Frio River – Her First Trip!

The Frio River is a spring fed oasis in the middle of an arid region. We spent 2 days paddling through the Texas wilderness tent camping on an island and hiking up rapids.

Ive recently got a couple kayaks.

Gonna have to look into this section of the river.

So far haven’t made it past a couple local parks with little ponds.

A trick my boyfriend and I discovered. Add marshmellows to your coffee. It works as both a creamer and a sweetener. We never make coffee without it when we go camping now.

  5. Tyler W on November 22, 2022 at 8:38 am

Camping with Lisa seems about as much fun as having your little sister tag along….

  6. Beverly Staley on November 22, 2022 at 8:38 am

Watching WVU football! Lol okkkkkk. Cool trip. Would love to do a trip like this with my hubs!

  10. damkayaker on November 22, 2022 at 8:40 am

Lisa has a nice Old Town. I have an old 2004 Casco that is my beater. I can’t believe you dragged it through the shallows … the horror.

  11. Tom White on November 22, 2022 at 8:40 am

We lover the Frio. That whole area is amazing.

  15. Felipe Herrera on November 22, 2022 at 8:43 am

What part of the Frio is this?

  16. bones rhodes on November 22, 2022 at 8:46 am

—- so, y’all were paddling UPriver – her first time canoeing and working AGAINST the current ?

Okay, so this is is over a year old and there are a TON of comments so a response is probably unlikely but here goes anyway.

WOW! This video brought back so many flooding memories of my childhood and spending my summers in Concan. My family started going to a Cocan in the late 40’s / early 50’s and i used to visit the Neal’s and Cocnan every year all the way up to the year I joined the Navy.

The wife and I are both from New Braunfels and now live post Navy in Maryland. We recently took up kayaking and I’m here to tell you, your video makes me want to trek across country for a kayak in the Frio.

Thank you for sharing this video. I will be looking to purchase some of you products come next spring.

    Best regards
    Darrin

35 years in Texas and I tell you one thing, I’ll take 72 degree summer days on the Washington coast over the miserable heat all day. Frio is nice in general but it doesn’t hold a candle to any of the kayak places in WA.

  19. Jaime 33 on November 22, 2022 at 8:49 am

Water has been super low. You can actually look at the water levels on concan live view

  20. mark shean on November 22, 2022 at 8:51 am

    Double sleeping bag, no excuses.

  21. Patrick Wier on November 22, 2022 at 8:51 am

Man, I totally dig this trip. As a native Texan (now transplant living in Colorado) and growing up taking trips to the Hill Country this hits hard! Just recently packrafted the Yampa and Green rivers and now want to experience the good ole Frio in my Kokopelli!!

  22. C B on November 22, 2022 at 8:55 am

That was awesome…I have never ever camped. But if someone ask me to do something like this I would.

  23. Rock me Dr. Zaius on November 22, 2022 at 8:56 am

Not sure if you are a reader but I think every Texan should read Empire of the Summer Moon. Great for learning the history , particularly Comanche in the Texas lands.

  24. James Fleeting on November 22, 2022 at 8:58 am

Just discovered this channel (and that kayak camping is even a thing) but man it is inspiring. Been binge watching your videos and the quality is just amazing. I’ve lived in central Texas for 10 years and didn’t know we had nature like this around.

Love your channel! This video helped convince my lady to take a camping trip 🤙🙏 we’re not kayaking but we’re going to Uvalde/Camp Wood area. Any recommendations on where to park so we can camp in the river/stream beds?

  29. Trent West on November 22, 2022 at 9:00 am

She did great! It is awesome that you have someone that will do those things with you. I lived in Kerrville and loved it down there.

another great video. Thank you for sharing. Great job Lisa!

  35. Rabble Rouser on November 22, 2022 at 9:12 am

Why would you choose to take 2 sit inside kayaks on a shallow river summer trip? A sit on top would have been easier to get in and out of, and you don’t have to bail out the water if you splash it in or if you have a leak

  36. jon moreno on November 22, 2022 at 9:13 am

Water is still pretty low just came from my vacation in Rio Frio tx

  37. Fell Falkwings on November 22, 2022 at 9:14 am

Nice adventure! Sometimes it’s easy to forget that places like this exists in this world.

  38. Amos Iron Wolf on November 22, 2022 at 9:14 am

I’d hate to see what levels are there right now. Las Moras Springs at Brackettville is so down the creek is dry and the spring-fed pool at Fort Clark as well. Props to Lisa for getting out there.

  39. Spin Drift on November 22, 2022 at 9:15 am

I took my kids like 4-5 years ago and it was low to me 🤷🏽‍♂️… I like the Guadalupe has a good flow and good fishing

  44. Sanjay Gupta on November 22, 2022 at 9:22 am

Where do you start the kayak on the river and finish the route? What is best area on the river for it and also camping? And can you rent kayak locally?

  45. ClashWildfang on November 22, 2022 at 9:24 am

Absolutely gorgeous! I’m just starting kayaking, going out for the first time this weekend! How do you know if a place is ok to camp? Would love to make this trip someday
